Europe hold a five-point lead going into the final day as Team USA battled hard on Day 2 of the Ryder Cup in Rome.

The morning foursomes session saw Europe pick up an additional three points which included a historic win as Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg recorded a commanding 9-and-7 victory over Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler. That marked the largest margin of victory for any 18-hole match in the history of the Ryder Cup. There have been a pair of 10-and-9 foursomes wins, in 1931 and 1947, but that was back when 36-hole matches were played.

Max Homa and Sam Burns led the comeback charge early in the afternoon's four-ball contest as they stormed to multiple-hole leads over Hovland/Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood/Nicolai Hojgaard. They claimed two vital points with 4&3 and 2&1 victories.

The leaderboard was painted red for a mere moment or two in the afternoon but that was cut short after Justin Rose's experience came to the aid of Robert MacIntyre. He and the Scotsman went on to add to the Europeans' lead with a 3&2 win over the inseparable, but underperforming, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas duo.

If there was one moment from Day 2 that sums up Team USA's Ryder Cup so far, it would be on the 16th tee when team captain Zach Johnson convinced Jordan Spieth to hit 3-wood instead of his driver and it ended in the water.

Patrick Cantlay displayed a putting clinic in the final match of the afternoon and single-handedly fought his way back to take on Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick at the final hole. His sublime putting continued on the 18th as he made birdie to force long putts to tie from the Europeans. They couldn't match Cantlay and the US stole an extra point on the final green.

It's worth noting that while the lead is five points, it is far from over for the US. Currently, the biggest final-day comeback margin is four points. That happened over 20 years ago, back in 1999, when the US famously overcame a four-point deficit to win 14.5-13.5.

Ryder Cup updates, highlights from Day 2

(All times BST)

6:00 pm: That's all for today's live blog, do join us tomorrow for the final day!

5:54 pm: Neither of the Europeans can make it and Cantlay's putt means the US have a glimmer of hope!

5:50 pm: Cantlay sinks the birdie from long range! That forces McIlroy or Fitzpatrick to sink their put in order to save a half point.

5:45 pm: Fitzpatrick lays up and is still somehow in the best position. McIlroy is in the bunker, Clark is off to the right and Cantlay is on the edge of the green but his lie could be tough.

5:36 pm: The Americans have the advantage of the tee as Fitzpatrick and McIlroy fail to find the fairway.

5:30 pm: It's Cantlay AGAIN with a massive putt! He wins the hole on the 17th to make it tied as they go on to the 18th.

5:19 pm: Cantlay's putting has been terrific this afternoon and he makes sure McIlroy and Fitzpatrick fight for every point out there. Cantlay and Clark head to the 17th one behind the Europeans.

5:10 pm: Even more sarcastic chants come from the European fans as they sing: "Can we play you every week?"

5:00 pm: A phenomenal performance from Rose and MacIntyre secures another point for Team Europe with a 3&2 victory over Thomas/Spieth.

4:52 pm: Spieth finds the water on 16 with a 3-wood and that could be all she wrote in that match.

4:48 pm: Some European fans are having a laugh at Zach Johnson with a chant of: "You're getting sacked in the morning... you're getting sacked in the morning... sacked in the morrrrrning!" Sacked is also known as "fired" across the pond.

4:43 pm: Has McIntyre just killed any last hope for Thomas and Spieth? He's brilliantly putted to keep a three-hole lead heading to the 16th. It's another guaranteed half-point for Europe but they'll want the whole thing!

4:30 pm: It's only right that Homa is the one to putt for the win and he does exactly that. His stellar performance earns the US another point in their comeback bid.

4:27 pm: What a time for Rory to sink one! The Europeans add another bit of blue on the leaderboard as they go 1 Up against Cantlay/Clark.

4:19 pm: McIntyre and Rose are now pulling away from Spieth and Thomas as those US lads have gone to pieces on this back nine.

4:15 pm: OH TOMMY FLEETWOOD WOW! He's pulled out an insane chip in from the rough. They've pulled it back to 2 down with the 17th &18th to play!

4:07 pm: Fitzpatrick with a HUGE birdie and boy does that mean the world to him. The emotions are running high out there. Clark matches it to save the hole and keep it tied in the final match!

3:59 pm: Homa HOLES OUT from the bunker! Add it to his highlight reel because he has been exceptional today. That saw the pressure back on Fleetwood to hole his putt and continue the match, which he does! Onto the next...

3:57 pm: MacIntyre with a gutsy putt to extend their lead to two holes! That's the moment the Scotsman has been waiting for.

3:39 pm: Match four is TIED! It's all started happening out there - this time Cantlay pulls the US back into it.

3:34 pm: Finally! The Americans get another point on the board. This time from Burns/Morikawa with a 4&3 over Hovland/Aberg.

3:16 pm: Morikawa can't quite finish off his match with Hovland/Aberg and they head to the 15th with a four-hole lead. Their lead was six...

2:58 pm: Rose again for Europe! This time he puts his pair 1 Up to even out the blue from the red on the leaderboard. There are still many holes to play for but that is a huge step for team Europe.

2:52 pm: Morikawa looks almost back to his best! He takes the US 6 Up in the opening match of these four-balls. One more hole without a loss and they'll earn a vital point.

2:48 pm: The man of the moment is having a fine day's play so far in Rome.

2:41 pm: More good news for Europe as Rose/McIntyre claw back Thomas/Spieth. Just before the turn, Rose birdies to level it once again. What a match this is turning out to be.

2:33 pm: Just as I say that, Burns/Morikawa extend their lead but Homa/Harman give up a hole. Is there life for Fleetwood/Hojgaard?

2:28 pm: It's all about composure for the top two US pairs now as they wait until the holes run out. For Thomas/Spieth, they're holding their own but Cantlay/Clark can't quite get anything going out there. Still plenty of golf left to do so.

2:10 pm: Harman and Homa equal Burns and Morikawa as they also finish their front nine 4 Up! The US have control of the first two matches, a slim lead in the third and trail by one in the final match.

1:57 pm: Morikawa with a dagger blow to Europe as they finish their front nine. They make the turn 4 Up against Hovland/Aberg.

1:50 pm: Thomas takes advantage as they head towards the turn. His putt sees them go up against Rose/McIntyre.

1:43 pm: Rose uses his Ryder Cup experience to hole a 21-foot birdie putt at the sixth to win the hole and tie up their match with Spieth and Thomas.

1:33 pm: Burns keeps his cool as his putt is required to retain a three-hole lead and he does! He's been consistent this afternoon and appears to be proving his critics wrong as America are finally coming alive!

1:28 pm: That is ridiculous from McIlroy, what a drive!

1:15 pm: Homa continues his brilliant form from the morning with a huge putt at the sixth. If the US bring themselves back into this contest, they owe it to him!

1:11 pm: Just when Europe needed somebody to step up, McIlroy gets some blue on the board! A birdie two at the fourth.

1:04 pm: The US now lead in three out of the four matches! Rose can't make the birdie putt but Spieth can! It's well and truly game on. A reminder, if the US can clean sweep this afternoon they will be just three points behind going into the final day.

1:01 pm: It's getting tasty out there! Burns with the putter once more and makes it 3 Up in the opening match. He then turns to the crowd, cups his ears and welcomes the abuse.

12:57 pm: He may not be playing this afternoon but he made sure to stay involved!

12:47 pm: Burns' putter is officially HOT! He sinks another and doubles the lead over Hovland and Aberg.

12:43 pm: Take a bow Max Homa! A simply sensational putt places the pressure on Hojgaard who misses his from short range and the US take a 2 Up lead through four.

12:29 pm: A huge opportunity for Cantlay to make it three leads for the US but his putt slides wide.

12:24 pm: Burns' putter is heating up! He makes another to double the lead over Hovland/Aberg.

12:14 pm: All four matches are officially underway! Clark pushes his drive out to the right but manages to hang onto the fairway, Cantlay bombs one down the middle, Fitzpatrick is in the rough on the left and McIlroy catches the thick rough on the right.

12:01 pm: The third group are off and running. Thomas' opening drive finds the rough, Spieth finds the fairway, MacIntyre creams one down the middle and Rose follows his playing partner down the middle.

11:58 am: More red! Homa putts for the win at the first. A perfect start so far for the US.

11:44 am: Burns with a super start for the US as he sinks a birdie and gives his pairing a one-hole lead.

11:41 am: A bit of fan entertainment for you. The Ryder Cup really is like no other golf event.

11:29 am: The first group of the four-ball action are underway!

11:15 am: Rory was feeling it out there this morning!

11:00 am: Rahm's superb tee shot means Schauffele has to make his putt to continue the match and it just lips out! Europe add another point with a 2&1 win over the Americans. A total score of 3-1 in the foursomes.

10:52 am: This afternoon's matches have been released.

10:50 am: Hatton makes amends! A birdie putt to apply the pressure on the US and force Schauffele into a must-make. His putt is slightly downhill and it lips out! Europe retake the lead.

10:39 am: Hatton's putt creeps past the left side and the US escape with a half after a sensational putt from Cantlay.

10:25 am: Three wins in a row for Cantlay and Schauffele means they tie it up heading to the 15th.

10:20 am: McIlroy finishes it with a fine putt! Europe moves to 8.5 points.

10:16 am: Homa holes out from the edge of the green for the win! That's the first match victory of the Ryder Cup for this United States team.

10:12 am: Schauffele and Cantlay are reeling in Rahm/Hatton as they get back within one. Xander with the perfect putt this time.

10:04 am: An opening for Spieth and Thomas as they win the 16th. They get it back to one down as they head to the 17th and if they can get something out of this match, that would be huge for the US.

10:00 am: That one hurt Scottie.

9:51 am: Rahm makes a winning putt to extend his and Hatton's advantage, meanwhile McIlroy and Fleetwood restore their two-hole lead over Spieth and Thomas.

9:42 am: JT can't quite believe the 9&7...

9:36 am: Lowry can't make the putt and Homa/Harman get to 3 Up after the 12th. Spieth and Thomas reel another one back as they're now just one behind McIlroy and Fleetwood. Could this next half an hour be the momentum swing the US so desperately needs?

9:24 am: Some more hope for Spieth and Thomas as they finally sink a putt to win. There's more positivity on the other hole for the Americans as Homa doubles their lead over Lowry and Straka.

9:17 am: EAGLE for Fleetwood! Matched by Thomas! The US still trail by three in that match but they're not going down without a fight.

9:12 am: It's all over between Hovland/Aberg and Scheffler/Koepka as they storm to a 9&7! The largest margin of victory in an 18-hole Ryder Cup match EVER!

9:04 am: More hammer blows to the US as Fleetwood finishes McIlroy's sensational drive and Rahm/Hatton extend their lead over Schauffele/Cantlay. Three matches are blue, with the other tied between Straka/Lowry and Homa/Harman.

9:00 am: The world number one and the PGA Championship winner find themselves EIGHT down as they concede yet another hole. This is truly remarkable.

8:47 am: The front nine comes to an end for Hovland/Aberg vs Scheffler/Koepka and it's the Europeans who are ahead at the turn. They're not just ahead, they're embarrassing the Americans with a seven-hole lead!

8:43 am: It's Hatton time. He makes a 24-footer at the sixth to double the lead over Schauffele and Cantlay.

8:38 am: It's yet another bogey for Spieth and Thomas which sees McIlroy and Fleetwood take a three-hole lead. For Europe, it's been a walk in the park this morning.

8:29 am: Hovland/Aberg are now SIX up through the first eight holes against arguably the US' strongest partnership in Scheffler and Koepka.

8:20 am: McIlroy slides his putt wide and Thomas takes advantage of the rare European mistake. He pulls it back to two down.

8:12 am: Sepp putting it on a plate!

8:03 am: FIVE UP for Hovland/Aberg! Lowry misses his par putt at the fifth and they concede to the Americans to put a slither of red back on the board.

7:51 am: A sea of commanding blue on the leaderboard as McIlroy/Fleetwood go 3 Up in the first game and Hovland/Aberg hold their four-hole lead through the fifth.

7:45 am: Scheffler this time misses the putt and Europe are 4 Up in that match.

7:37 am: An absolute gift from the Americans to Europe at the third as Hovland sees his chip roll straight back down to his feet but Scheffler goes and does the same. Aberg's attempt was close and Koepka was nowhere near.

7:34 am: Red on the leaderboard! Harman with a gutsy putt at the second after a great approach by Homa.

7:29 am: This Fleetwood putt is insane.

7:22 am: All four matches are now underway and Cantlay becomes the first American of the day to hit the fairway. Spieth again misses a par putt and the first match sees them fall three down to McIlroy and Fleetwood.

7:06 am: The US needed to go and get out there this morning and stamp their authority on this Ryder Cup... they've done anything but. It's three holes played, three holes to team Europe. Spieth makes his putt at the second but Fleetwood holes from 35 feet to go 2 Up! Back at the first and Hovland/Aberg are 1 Up after a double-bogey from Scheffler/Koepka.

7:00 am: The first two matches are underway and there is already blue on the board! Spieth missed the par putt, giving Europe two putts to take go 1 Up and they do exactly that.

6:35 am: Good morning! Welcome to The Sporting News' live blog of the 2023 Ryder Cup — Day 2. Europe swept aside USA 4-0 in the morning session yesterday... surely USA won't let that happen again!
