GOODISON PARK — Manchester United returned from the international break in style as they beat Everton 3-0 at a hostile Goodison Park.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial saw them hold on to their status as the most in-form Premier League team with five wins from their last six games and four away league victories on the bounce. It was also their largest away win in the league since beating Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, a match that kept Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the job for a few more weeks.

For now, Erik ten Hag won't need to worry about his job but he may want to stay away from the touchline as it was no doubt United's most complete performance over 90 minutes this season. The Dutchman was banned for this match after receiving three yellow cards.

Garnacho's Puskas award-worthy goal gave Man United the lead after just three minutes. In similar fashion to Wayne Rooney versus Manchester City and Cristiano Ronaldo versus Juventus, two United greats, Garnacho may have outdone both with his quite sensational strike. The Argentine's overhead kick was from beyond the penalty spot and Jordan Pickford had no choice but to turn and watch it rocket past him.

Rashford then doubled United's lead early in the second half when VAR awarded the away side a penalty. Martial was originally given a yellow card by the referee John Brooks for simulation. However, that was rescinded and Rashford dispatched from the spot. It was only the Englishman's second league goal of the season and his first since September.

Martial finished off the Toffees with a delicate chip over Pickford after originally kickstarting the counter-attack in his own half. The Frenchman has scored seven goals against Everton in the league, his most against any opponent in the competition.

Man United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo shines on Premier League debut

Kobbie Mainoo's first-half performance was possibly the best of any United midfielder this season. Despite making his first Premier League start, it looked like he'd made a career's worth of appearances. Mainoo was exceptional in pre-season but an ankle injury kept him out of action the last few months and United's patience has paid off.

Ten Hag outlined his plan to utilise the youngster as an anchor man, speaking back in August. The Dutchman said: “Kobbie Mainoo, we have seen him against Arsenal [in pre-season], he is ready to also to pick that role.

"At this moment, he’s not available but I think he will also, in say one, two months. Not in one month, but in two months, he will be available. And so, for the winter coming up, he absolutely will have his games."

Winter arrived at Goodison and so too did Mainoo's dominance. The way he ran the midfield looked similar to Paul Pogba, in the few games Pogba actually proved his worth in a United shirt.

He was substituted in the 72nd minute, and Diogo Dalot led the praise with a long hug as he made his way off the pitch. Had he played the full 90 minutes, he would have been in a better position to be awarded the man of the match trophy, which was given to Alejandro Garnacho.

Erik ten Hag not out of the woods yet

United have at times found it difficult on the road under manager Erik ten Hag, and they face two significant challenges in upcoming clashes with Galatasaray and Newcastle United this week. These are two matches that could play a pivotal role in their season.

The match against Galatasaray holds particular significance as it could determine United's placement in Group A of the Champions League. Anything other than three points in Istanbul will all but certainly end any hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

Facing Newcastle away poses another challenge, as both teams compete for a coveted top-four spot in the Premier League. The outcome of this clash could shape their domestic campaign with a win helping their bid for securing Champions League football.

"Copenhagen was very hostile, we played the first 25 minutes very good and that was an example of how we will go in such games and it gives us such violence," he told The Sporting News.

"It is normal when you go to Everton, what this club has had to overcome is really sad, you know their team is angry and really motivated and has fuel to hammer the next opponent. We like such challenges."

You get the feeling those challenges upcoming are going to be tougher than Everton on Sunday afternoon and failure to win either could undo the majority of Ten Hag's hard work over the past month or so as he's steadied the ship since their freefall in October.

Everton vs Man United live updates, highlights from Premier League

Watch in US:

FULLTIME: Everton 0-3 Man United

That's it from Goodison Park. United's most complete performance of the season and while Everton showed glimpses of danger, they need results now more than ever.

88th minute: United should have made it four. Another brilliant counter sees Rashford free down the right but can't find Fernandes who made a bursting run into the box.

75th minute: GOAL! Everton 0-3 Man United

That is a quite beautiful team goal from United. Dalot clears the ball and Everton lose the ball on the halfway line. Martial starts the counter with a through ball to Pellistri, who has just come on as substitute. The Uruguayan slips a pass to Fernandes in the middle of the park who then delicately picks out Martial in the box and he exquisitely beats Pickford.

71st minute: Rashford fires the ball across the face of goal to find Garnacho at the far post who slides to meet the cross but is off balance and his shot hits the side netting.

64th minute: Mainoo continues to boss the midfield and does so with a delightful ball over the top to Fernandes. He can't quite pick out a man at the back post but the ball makes its way to Garnacho who slices an effort both high and wide.

57th minute: Gueye strikes on the half-volley and it really tests Onana, who has had a good game, but he makes the save.

55th minute: GOAL! Everton 0-2 Man United

Rashford converts with a fantastic penalty! That should do his confidence the world of good.

Watch in UK:

53rd minute: And it is a penalty! Martial has his yellow card taken away and Rashford steps up to the spot.

52nd minute: Martial is booked by the referee for simulation. He feels hard done by and VAR take a look at it.

46th minute: We're back underway at Goodison.

HALFTIME: Man United 1-0 Everton

That's all for the first half. United will be delighted to get to the break still leading as the hosts looked close to drawing level.

41st minute: Everton cut open United beautifully and the ball makes its way to Gueye in a wonderful position but he can't find the composure needed and sends an effort way over the bar.

40th minute: Mainoo looks like a player with a century of appearances to his name yet it's his first Premier League start. He was born in 2005...

32nd minute: Onana now with a huge double save to keep his side ahead! He first denies Calvert-Lewin and then McNeil. Mainoo then clears off the line for United and Goodison smells blood.

31st minute: Everton's best chance of the match comes from a corner as Calvert-Lewin's header is straight at Onana, he should have done better.

24th minute: Earning a free-kick in a prime crossing position on the right flank, Everton benefits from McTominay's reckless challenge on Gueye, who was tackled from behind. Although the home fans call for a booking for the Scotsman, the referee doesn't oblige.

13th minute: There are quite a few fireworks blasting in the background of Goodison. Can't quite figure out why?

10th minute: Calvert-Lewin has a chance to draw level but he can't quite steer the ball into the far corner after doing well to cut onto his left foot.

8th minute: Did Garnacho learn that from a fellow Toffee? His strike certainly had shades of Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City all those years ago. United fans are singing their former striker's name.

3rd minute: GOAL! Everton 0-1 Man United

OH MY WORD! Garnacho silences Goodison with an insane overhead kick! That is out of this world.

Watch in US:

1st minute: We are underway at Goodison Park! United kick us off.

10 minutes until kickoff: A warm round of applause for the late Terry Venables as we rapidly approach kickoff inside a hostile Goodison.

15 minutes until kickoff: The Everton players have headed down the tunnel to finalise their preparations and they did so to a loud show of support from the Gwladys Street End.

30 minutes until kickoff: The players are on the pitch, going through their warm-up routines. A few members of the United squad are sporting hats and gloves, while, in classic Sean Dyche style, not a single Toffee is seen with a hat or snood. Telling? It may be.

1 hour until kickoff: We have the team news! Luke Shaw comes straight into the starting squad, as does 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo. Rasmus Hojlund didn't pass the fitness test and Anthony Martial starts in his place. For Everton,

1 hour 15 minutes until kickoff: The full list of Man United players we saw arrive at Goodison Park moments ago: Bruno Fernandes, Hannibal Mejbri, Raphael Varane, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Tom Heaton, Scott McTominay, Donny Van de Beek, Altay Bayindir, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, Andre Onana, Victor Lindelof, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Luke Shaw, Sergio Reguilon, Facundo Pellistri.

United fans will be delighted to see the likes of Shaw and Mainoo included. But will they be in the starting XI? We'll find out soon.

1 hour 30 minutes until kickoff: A bit of pre-match reading for you then. If you're looking for some betting inspiration for today's match then check out our tips and prediction piece here.

And if you're wondering why there could be plenty of protests and banners from Everton fans, we've also explained just why the fanbase is unhappy with a recent 10-point deduction.

2 hours until kickoff: Dyche has one thing on his mind. "The focus since I came here has been sorting things out on the pitch. The job hasn't changed for me."

Everton vs Man United lineups

Dyche is eager for his team to make a statement on the field, undeterred by the noise surrounding the club. The Toffees are enjoying a four-game unbeaten streak, including significant away victories against West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Vitaliy Mykolenko has scored in consecutive matches from the left-back position. Former Manchester United midfielder James Garner, having earned Dyche's confidence, starts in the midfield.

Everton starting lineup (4-4-1-1, left to right): Pickford (GK) — Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko — Harrison, Garner, Gueye, McNeil — Doucoure — Calvert-Lewin.

Everton subs (12): To be confirmed

Like Everton, United have picked up important wins in the league having won four of their past five games, despite some unconvincing performances. Luke Shaw makes his first start since August. With Jonny Evans still injured, Victor Lindelof is chosen ahead of Raphael Varane.

Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez remain out with long-term injuries and Rasmus Hojlund couldn't pass a late fitness test. Christian Eriksen is out with a knee injury.

Man United starting lineup (4-2-3-1, left to right): Onana — Dalot, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw — Mainoo, McTominay — Fernandes Garnacho, Rashford — Martial.

Man United subs (12): To be confirmed
