Talatau Junior Amone is set to be deregistered by the NRL after narrowly avoiding jail time over last year's hammer attack.

Earlier in December, he was issued with a notice under the NRL's Playing Contract and Remuneration Rules.

The move, which is the first step towards deregistration of a player, comes after the Dragons five-eighth was issued with a two-year Intensive Corrections Order to be served in the community.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Amone has formally accepted the NRL’s punishment to deregister him.

The 21-year-old was found guilty of assault in October and faced Wollongong Local Court last week along with his father.

Amone's lawyer, Elias Tabchouri, claimed the pair were "prepared for anything" as they entered the proceedings, but pleaded with the magistrate to spare them jail time and instead allow them to conduct community service.

Will Junior Amone play for the Dragons next year?

Amone was stood down from all club duties since the verdict two months ago and is now set to have his contract torn up under deregistration rules.

St George Illawarra released a brief comment regarding the matter last week ahead of the possible sanctions from the NRL.

"The Dragons acknowledge the two-year Intensive Corrections Order that was handed down to player Talatau Amone," the statement said.

"The club will now work closely with the NRL Integrity Unit to determine the appropriate next steps."

Magistrate Fleming told the local product that his conduct was "appalling" and issued a stern warning to Amone about the potential consequences of his actions while handing down the verdict last week.

“You armed yourself with a hammer, the victims were vulnerable, the victim was up on a roof, there was nowhere to go,” she told the court.

“I think it is a tragedy this could jeopardise your entire future in the profession you love... it is your tragedy, not mine.”

Amone's father, Talatau, has been sentenced to two and a half years behind bars, with a non parole period of 12 months, while both men will have to pay their share of almost $15,000 worth of damages and compensation.

They were both found guilty earlier this year of damaging property, intimidation, entering a building or land with the intention to commit an indictable offence, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm from the incident in Warawong.
