Mitch Kenny has issued an explanation on social media after a viral image of him on Instagram circulated on Boxing Day.

The two-time premiership winning Penrith hooker has blamed "trolls" for the post which had an image of him accompanied by the caption, "Couple Boxing Day lines have got me in troubleeee".

The NRL have confirmed they are aware of the image, which was allegedly posted to his Instagram story yesterday.

"The NRL is aware of the matter and will be liaising with the club," the NRL noted in a statement to Wide World Of Sports.

However, Kenny has since dismissed the controversy surrounding him as he returned to Instagram to claim he had nothing to do with the post.

"Happy New Year guys," Kenny stated. "Enjoy and ignore trolls who grabbed my phone. Happy New Year."

It is not the first time this year a player has been caught up in a compromising situation on social media after Valentine Holmes was banned for one match and fined $25,000 for what he claimed was a prank gone wrong.

In that image, which was also heavily circulated on social media, Holmes was pictured with a small bag of white powder.

"It is alleged Holmes engaged in conduct which has brought the game and his club into disrepute by publicly associating the game with illegal drugs," the NRL noted in a statement before the North Queensland star was sanctioned.
