For the first time since Floyd Mayweather fought former UFC champion Conor McGregor, fight fans will witness one of the best boxers in the world against one of the best fighters in MMA. Tyson Fury, the WBC heavyweight champion, faces former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 28.

The 10-round bout, plus undercard action, will air on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.

Making his pro debut in 2008, Fury is a former English, British, European, and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, “The Gypsy King” made himself known when he beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 for the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring heavyweight titles. Despite posting a defining triumph, Fury soon succumbed to mental health issues and battled drug and alcohol abuse.

After losing 140 pounds in weight, Fury returned to action and beat Deontay Wilder in February 2020 for the WBC title. Fury retired in April 2022 after knocking out Dillian Whyte but backtracked and returned in the fall of that year to defeat Derek Chisora via TKO. Fight fans have looked for him to face unified champion Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua, but Fury has gone a different route.

“As soon as that bell goes, it’ll be bombs away! This guy is supposed to be the hardest puncher in the world, but let’s see how he reacts when he gets hit by the Big GK," Fury said. "I can’t wait to get back out there under the lights. I’m looking forward to showing the world that The Gypsy King is the greatest fighter of his generation in an epic battle with another master of his craft.”

Ngannou showed interest in boxing before turning professional in MMA in 2013. Joining the UFC in 2015, Ngannou went 12-2 for the promotion. "The Predator" won the UFC heavyweight title in 2021 and defended it in January 2022 against Ciryl Gane. After contract talks with the UFC went sour, he left the promotion and joined the PFL.

The former champion appeared in a boxing ring after Fury’s fight against Whyte. The Cameroonian made clear his intentions to box, but many didn’t think the fight would happen. Now they face off for the ultimate bragging rights and a big payday. Ngannou has been training under the tutelage of former two-time heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

“I’ve been waiting to meet Tyson in the ring for the past three years," Ngannou said. "My dream was always to box and to box the best. After becoming the undisputed MMA Heavyweight Champion, this is my opportunity to make that dream come true and cement my position as the baddest man on the planet… All I will say to Tyson for now is he better dance in that ring because if I touch him, he’s going to sleep.”

Despite being sanctioned as a legitimate professional fight, Fury's WBC heavyweight title will not be at stake.
