ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League as they claimed a thrilling 4-2 win over Newcastle United at Anfield.

After missing a first-half penalty and a host of presentable chances, the Reds took the lead early in the second half as Mohamed Salah atoned from close range.

And they responded to the fresh setback of an Alexander Isak goal soon after, substitute Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones getting on the scoresheet in quick succession.

The threat of a nervy finish was provided just as quickly when Sven Botman headed in from a corner to make it 3-2.

However, Salah wrapped it up with four minutes of normal time remaining, this time beating the impressive Martin Dubravka from the spot.

84th min: PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!!!

Mac Allister works his way out of a tight spot as Newcastle press for an equaliser before playing an utterly stunning through ball that puts Jota in one-on-one.

The Portuguese rounds Dubravka but is clipped by the goalkeeper just as he goes to shoot and the referee has no choice but to point at the spot.

82nd min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE ARE BACK IN IT!

What a crazy game! Newcastle win a corner and the delivery is a perfect one for Botman to leap highest and nod into the corner of the Kop-end goal.

Could they nick a point or even more here?

78th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL MAKE IT 3-1!!!

After struggling for so long to take their chances, the hosts get two goals in quick succession.

It's a scuffed finish from close-range from Gakpo but a brilliant outside-of-the-boot low cross from Salah that makes it. This has been a struggle for Liverpool, but they finally have breathing space.

74th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL RETAKE THE LEAD!

Finally, the hosts take one of their many, many opportunities! It's brilliant football that brings it, Jota trading quick passes with Salah and sliding the ball across for Jones to tap in.

They needed to take Dubravka completely out of it and finally succeeded in doing so.

70th min: How are Liverpool not ahead?!

Newcastle attempt to clear a corner but the ball falls to Gakpo, whose shot is again palmed out by a sprawling Dubravka. He has been immense tonight.

67th min: Endo goes in the book for a foul on Gordon, who has been so dangerous when he's had the ball for Newcastle tonight.

Joelinton soon follows him for catching Gravenberch as he attempts to break.

64th min: Liverpool piling the pressure on after being pegged back, with Diaz testing Dubravka and Nunez heading an Endo cross just wide.

Klopp has seen enough, here come three subs for the hosts, with Jota, Gravenberch and Gakpo entering the fray for Diaz, Nunez and Szoboszlai.

54th min: GOAL!!! NEWCASTLE LEVEL IT UP!

That's how you finish your chances! Gordon does brilliantly to get the ball out of a tight spot and beat two men on the left before slipping a perfect pass in for Isak, who pokes it past an onrushing Alisson. What a finish!

KICKOFF: Back under way at Anfield!

HALFTIME: Liverpool 0-0 Newcastle

45th min (+5): Alexander-Arnold booked for kicking the ball away after a foul on Gordon - the fans angry about that one, too, but they can  have few complaints.

45th min: Utter fury in the stands at Anfield as Anthony Taylor fails to go back to give a yellow card after giving an advantage following a Joelinton foul.

He then books Diaz for disagreeing with the failure to give what, at first glance, looked to be a clear trip. The fans are not happy!

40th min: Off the post for Liverpool!

Alexander-Arnold hits a powerful cross from the right-hand side after the ball sits up nicely and, though none of his teammates can knock it in, it rather incredibly comes back off the upright on the far side. Remarkable effort.

37th min: Now Newcastle's turn to have a goal disallowed!

Burn heads in at the back stick from a Miley cross to send the away end wild but the flag is up instantly for an offside in the build-up that is confirmed by VAR.

36th min: Huge chance for Nunez again!

The Uruguayan beats Botman to a ball over the top to get himself in one-on-one, but the finish is a weak one and Dubravka palms away.

28th min: Bruno sees the game's first yellow card for a late one on Endo as Liverpool try to break.

22nd min: PENALTY SAVED!

Salah goes central and Dubravka's dive isn't a big one to his left, so he is able to push the ball powerfully away.

It falls to Alexander-Arnold, but he can't keep his follow-up down and scuffs it over the bar.

20th min: PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!

Newcastle's reprieve is a short one, with Diaz dancing brilliantly into the Newcastle box and feeling contact from a desperate Botman slide challenge before hitting the deck.

The referee points to the spot and it would be a surprise if this one was overturned.

18th min: Liverpool have the ball in the net through Diaz, but it won't count.

Nunez looks offside from the ball over the top before he feeds his teammate for a cool finish. Newcastle's line a good one.

17th min: Nunez again involved, heading an Alexander-Arnold free-kick just over.

Newcastle will really be hoping the Uruguayan won't be as influential tonight as he was when the sides last met.

12th min: Nunez so close to giving Liverpool the lead, forcing Dubravka into a point-blank save after being fed by Salah.

8th min: Now Newcastle threatening, with Miley getting a shot in after Szoboszlai gets his pocket picked in a deep midfield position.

Fortunately for Liverpool, Gomez is there with a sliding block.

5th min: Liverpool all over Newcastle in these early stages, with their best chance falling to Alexander-Arnold, whose shot from just inside the area is deflected just wide.

Can the hosts make it pay?

KICKOFF: Liverpool start the game!

5 mins to kickoff: Newcastle win the toss and elect to deny Liverpool the right to attack the Kop second half.

25 mins to kickoff: An insight into the conditions here.

45 mins to kickoff: So, Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota in the Liverpool squad, but neither called up from the start. Interesting also to see Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo in the line-ups ahead of both jetting off for mid-season international duty.

As for Newcastle, a blow for them to lose Kieran Trippier to a groin issue - their injury crisis just refuses to subside.

1 hr to kickoff: The team news is in! Check out the selections above, or scroll down to the see the full squads.

1.5 hrs to kickoff: Some early team news reaching us here at Anfield, with suggestions that Darwin Nunez will keep his place up top after that wonderful goal at Burnley on Boxing Day.

2 hrs to kickoff: It's the first Premier League match of 2024. Will Liverpool lay down another title marker?
