Could we see the first No. 1 seed fall in the regional semifinals of the NCAA volleyball tournament?
Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Penn State meet again in the third round. The Nittany Lions handed the top-ranked Badgers their second loss of the season in a 3-1 match in November. Without 6-9 All-American Anna Smrek, Wisconsin lost its following match, too. Since then, the Badgers have bounced back better than before, handing top-ranked Nebraska its only loss of the season.
Still, if anyone knows how to take down the Badgers, it's Penn State. Second-year head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley surpassed expectations during the offseason with in-conference transfers Mac Podraza and Jess Mruzik. The setter and outside earned All-Big Ten first team selections after a season of a nearly unstoppable connection.
The Badgers are looking for their second national championship after winning it all in 2021. With Big Ten Player of the Year Sarah Franklin on their side of the net, that goal seems more and more likely every day.
