Australia secured an emphatic 3-0 victory in their United Cup quarter-final tie with Serbia on Wednesday night.

Alex de Minaur kicked off proceedings in Perth with an historic win over Novak Djokovic – his first-ever triumph against a world No. 1.

Ajla Tomljanović was then able to put the tie to bed in the women's singles before the duo of Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden placed the cherry on top in the mixed doubles.

De Minaur ends Djokovic's win streak in Australia

It was the perfect start to Australia's quarter-final against Serbia, with de Minaur claiming arguably the biggest win of his career.

The 24-year-old knocked off 24-time grand slam champion Djokovic in straight sets – 6-4 6-4.

The Serbian was nursing a wrist injury during the match, requiring treatment at one stage from the physio.

This should not take away from de Minaur, though, who played some exceptional tennis.

The Aussie won 95 per cent of his first serve points and did not face a single break point.

Notably, it was the first time 'The Demon' had beaten a world No. 1 in his relatively young career.

It was also Djokovic's first loss on Australian soil in six years, bringing an end to his 43-match winning streak Down Under.

"It's extremely special. Novak is an unbelievable competitor," de Minaur said.

"It feels surreal, it feels amazing. I'm happy to do it here in Perth and Australia."

Tomljanović picks up first win of 2024 campaign

Tomljanović was able to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead for Team Australia, comprehensively defeating Natalija Stevanović 6-1 6-1 in the women's singles.

She was scheduled to play Olga Danilović, but her opponent withdrew due to fatigue.

This set up a clash with world No.184 Stevanović, who the Australian dispatched in just over an hour in an efficient showing.

The victory – Tomljanović's first of 2024 – will give the 30-year-old plenty of confidence heading into the Australian Open as she continues her return from a lengthy injury layoff.

Hunter and Ebden combine for more doubles success

While the result was purely academic, Hunter and Ebden made sure to maintain their perfect record in the mixed doubles of this United Cup.

They defeated the Serbian duo of Dejana Radanović Nikola Ćaćić 6-3 6-3 to lock down a 3-0 victory in the overall tie.

Australia will face either Germany or Greece in the semi-finals in Sydney.

Poland have also progressed to the final four and will play the victor of the France vs. Norway tie.
