How many Australian horses are in the 2023 Melbourne Cup?

The race that stops the nation is upon us, with the annual Melbourne Cup set for Tuesday, November 7th.

Gold Trip will be back to defend his crown in the $7.5 million event at Flemington, while overseas raider Vauban is at the top of the betting market with the likes of Without A Fight and Soulcombe. 

However, there are a couple of local hopes in the 24-horse field, with two Australian-bred gallopers ready to take on the mammoth 3200m task.

How many Australian horses are in the 2023 Melbourne Cup?

Heading into the 2023 Melbourne Cup, there are just two Australian-bred horses slated to compete in the race, including former winner Vow And Declare.

However, only four horses in this year's Cup are trained outside of Australia or New Zealand, with the likes of Gold Trip and Soulcombe moving here to be trained by the likes of Chris Waller or the successful Maher/Eustace stable.
