LAS VEGAS -- Golden Boy Promotions kicks off 2024 by spotlighting one of their brightest talents. Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) returns to action for the first time in over a year after health scares threatened his career and will debut at 154 pounds against Fredrick Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs) at the Virgin Hotels.

Ortiz was on the fast track to a world title by blazing a trail through the welterweight division. After a stellar 2021 when he took out both Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Maurice Hooker, it was expected that the fighter out of Grand Prairie, Texas was within striking distance of facing the best 147-pounders of the world.
Unfortunately, a series of health scares put those plans on hold as Ortiz would only fight once in 2022 and miss the entirety of 2023. But with those health concerns finally behind him, the 26-year-old returns and plans to put a new weight class on notice.
Standing across from him will be Lawson, who not only hopes to end Ortiz's perfect knockout streak and hand the young fighter the first loss of his career. It will be a tall task as Lawson has yet to face a fighter on the lame level of Ortiz.
