Glenn Maxwell has blasted the greatest knock in ODI World Cup history, scoring a brilliant double-century against Afghanistan to rescue Australia and keep their hopes of winning the tournament alive.

With his side reeling at 7/91 and requiring 292 for victory in their run chase on Tuesday, the 35-year-old took matters into his own hands and etched his name into the history books, securing the win with three overs remaining.

Maxwell's unbeaten 201* from 128 is the largest total by any Aussie in ODI history, the highest score in a run-chase in World Cup history and saw him become the first non-opener to score an ODI double-century.

The big-hitting right-hander finished with 21 fours and 10 sixes in a remarkable innings, despite struggling with cramps throughout the individual performance.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Maxwell admitted he struggled with the conditions in Mumbai and believes the Aussies are now in a strong place to win the title after a shaky start.

"I feel shocking... I haven’t really done a whole lot of high-intensity exercise in the heat. It certainly got a hold of me today," he said.

"We came out with a plan to stay at the same end for a little bit until I could get some movement back, and luckily enough I was able to stick it out to the end.

"I certainly had my chances... I led a charmed life out there. I was very lucky.

"After the first two games, everyone was quick to write us off. To come back and win six straight is a great effort from this group... the belief is always there.

"To win a game like tonight, hopefully that belief spreads through the changeroom.”

Maxwell has enjoyed a stellar tournament in the green and gold, scoring the fastest ODI century in history against the Netherlands, but was sidelined for one game due to a concussion suffered during a golf accident.

The all-rounder received high praise from captain Pat Cummins, who played the supporting role with 12* off 68 balls while Maxwell tore the Afghanistan bowling attack to shreds.

"That’s just ridiculous," he said.

"Maxy was out of this world. It’s got to be the greatest ODI innings that’s ever happened.”

Australia will play their final group stage match against Bangladesh on Saturday, before moving into the World Cup semi-finals in an attempt to win their sixth trophy.
