One of the most heated rivalries in sports kicks off this month, as the 2023-24 Rivalry Series begins. The seven-game women's hockey series features games between the national programs from the United States and Canada.

The teams have dominated in international competition, featuring numerous championship games played between the two sides. Either Canada or the United States has won every IIHF Women's World Championship or Olympic gold medal.

While this event is more of a friendly-ish affair, the Canadians and Americans still are going to battle hard for bragging rights. Last year, Canada pulled out an incredible victory over the USA, coming back from down 3-0 in the series by winning the last four games and taking the Rivalry Series with a Game 7 win.

Here is everything you need to know for the 2023-24 Rivalry Series.

What is the Rivalry Series in hockey?

The Rivalry Series was introduced by USA Hockey and Hockey Canada back in the 2018-19 season. It was a way for the two powerhouse organizations to meet on an annual basis, outside of their typical international competitions.

The first year, the event consisted of three games between the women’s national teams. Canada took the series 2-1. The following 2019-20 season consisted of five games, with the series expanding outside of just a single month. Team USA dominated that year, taking four of the five games.

The series was not played in 2020-21 or 2021-22 due to COVID-19, but was revived last winter. Canada came back from down 3-0 in the series and won the last four games, earning Rivalry Series bragging rights.

When does the 2023-24 Rivalry Series start?

The seven games between the bitter rivals begins in November with games on Nov. 8 and Nov. 11, both on the West Coast of the United States.

Games 3 and 4 won't be until mid-December, when the two play in Ontario. Then, it will be a nearly two-month layoff until the final three games, which are scheduled for early February in Saskatchewan and Minnesota, with the final game scheduled for Feb. 11
