The PGA Tour gets up and running on Thursday, January 4, as a vast array of the world's best golfing talent travels across the Pacific to Hawaii's second largest island, Maui; teeing off their 2024 campaigns in The Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Taking place at Maui's Kapalua Resort, The Sentry is a staple of the PGA Tour and provides the world's best players with a chance to lay down an early marker on the rest of the competition. 2023's winner, Spaniard Jon Rahm, went on to claim three more events in the 2022/23 Tour, including The Masters, before tailing off towards the end of the campaign.
The Tournament of Champions has been played since 1953 and moved to Maui in 1999, kick-starting the calendar year at a venue unique for its location, climate, and prestige. It's one of only two Hawaii-based events on the PGA Tour, the other being mid-January's Sony Open in Honolulu, with these making up just eight tournaments played outside the US mainland.
The Kapalua Resort also played host to a record-breaking 2022 edition of the tournament, with victorious Australian Cameron Smith scoring an outstanding -34 under-par to not only take home the trophy, but also shoot the lowest 72 hole-to-par score of any player in PGA Tour history.
With a $20 million prize fund up for grabs this time around, as well as an early lead in the year's standings, defending champion Rahm and every other qualifier will be hoping to give a good showing at the Kapalua Resort, and begin a stacked year of golf in the best possible way.

Which players are competing at The Sentry Tournament of Champions?
Coming off the back of success in both last year's Tournament of Champions and taking the green jacket at the 2023 Masters in Augusta, Jon Rahm could well be the man to beat at The Sentry in 2024. The Spaniard was also a member of the successful Team Europe side who won the Ryder Cup in Italy last October.
Norwegian Viktor Hovland ended 2023 as winner of the FedEx Cup, picking up the most points of any player on last year's PGA Tour, and there's little doubt that the 26-year-old, who has exploded onto the scene in recent years, will want to pick up where he left off as the 2024 golfing calendar gets underway.
Elsewhere, the USA has several contenders heading to Hawaii looking for a win on "home" soil, none more so than Scottie Scheffler, who overtook Rahm as world number one in May of last year. Both Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark won maiden majors in 2023, and victory at the Kapalua Resort would be the perfect way to get their new campaigns up and running.
Past winners of The Sentry Tournament of Champions
Jack Nicklaus won the Tournament of Champions a record five times between 1963 and 1977, and is one of only 16 players to have tasted victory more than once.
Of this year's contenders, 2023 champion Rahm and US trio Harris English, Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth each have the chance to join that illustrious group.
