Hall of Fame: History and Establishment

The roots of the International Tennis Hall of Fame trace back to the Newport Casino, a National Historic Landmark opened in 1880 as a social club.

Recognized by the International Tennis Federation, the Newport Casino transitioned into the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, solidifying its status as a bastion of tennis history.

Van Alen's vision in 1954 was to create a "shrine to the ideals of the game," leading to the foundation of the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

Situated within the Newport Casino, the Hall of Fame boasts historic grounds that echo the origins of tennis in the United States. The casino, initially a social club, now houses a museum that preserves and showcases the rich history of the sport.

The historic grounds serve as a reminder of tennis's evolution, with the Hall of Fame embracing its role as a curator of the sport's heritage.

Is Leander Paes the first Indian player to be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame?

Leander Paes etched his name in tennis history by becoming the first Asian man to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Paes, a legendary figure in tennis, secured his place in the player category, becoming the first Indian to be inducted in this category at the Hall of Fame. He boasts an impressive record of 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles. His illustrious career includes representing India since turning professional in 1991.

Remarkably, he is one of only three men to achieve a career Grand Slam in both doubles disciplines. Furthermore, Paes shares the Open Era record for the most mixed doubles Grand Slam titles with former partner Martina Navratilova.

“I played tennis for most of my life. To be a professional athlete for so long, now when I think of it, is mind-boggling,” Paes told Indian Express.

“It’s almost like my life is coming full circle,” he further added. “I’m more talented in football. I gave up playing football in Barcelona to take up tennis. My goal at the time was to prove that Indians could be world champions and Olympic medal winners in individual sports. So to be recognised with awards like the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan is amazing. And now to be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame makes everything I’ve sacrificed seem worth it."

Alongside Paes, Vijay Amritraj and Richard Evans earned their places in the contributor category, a distinction subject to election every two years.

The Class of 2024 inductees will be officially honoured at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
