It was inevitable - firebrand tennis star Nick Kyrgios has got himself into the commentary box.

Having played only one competitive match in the last 12 months because of injury, the Australian star has found a way to stay involved in tennis.

The Sporting News has all the details about Kyrgios' career development.

Nick Kyrgios to make commentary box debut

Kyrgios has been booked by the Tennis Channel to commentate the ATP Finals, which begins on November 12 in Turin.

The Australian will provide special commentary on the round-robin event, which features the world's top eight players battling to be best of the campaign.

"Nick Kyrgios, whose electric style of play and straight-to-the-point conversational approach have endeared him to millions of fans around the world, is joining Tennis Channel as an analyst during its coverage of the ATP Finals November 12-19," the Tennis Channel said in a statement.

“It will be Kyrgios’ first time working with the network, and it will happen during the most exclusive event in men’s tennis, with just the top eight singles players and doubles teams qualifying for the event based on points earned during the 2023 season."

Nick Kyrgios' injury troubles

Wrist and knee injuries have seen Kyrgios' June match against Wu Yibing be his only competitive tennis action in the past 12 months.

After reaching the quarter-finals at US Open 2022, Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the next tournament in Tokyo, when his injury issues became publicly apparent.

He appeared close to being available for the Australian Open 2023, but then opted to have knee surgery in a bid to get his body right.

Kyrgios targeted a return at Wimbledon 2023, but aborted that attempt after the straight sets loss to Wu in a warm-up tournament.

The former world no.13 doesn't currently have a ranking after his inactivity on the tour.

Will Nick Kyrgios play Australian Open 2024?

It is currently unclear whether Kyrgios will feature at Melbourne Park in 2024.

The Australian hasn't played a professional tennis match since June, losing in straight sets to Wu at the Stuttgart Open.

He has struggled with wrist and knee injuries this season, with his last grand slam tournament match a quarter-final defeat to Karen Khachanov at the US Open in 2022.

With the Australian Open just over two months away, time is ticking for Kyrgios to prove his fitness and intention to play ahead of the event.

Despite this, tournament boss Craig Tiley is relatively confident he will be ready — and raring — to go.

"I personally believe in the communication that he's motivated to come back and play in January," Tiley said at the Australian Open launch in October.

"He loves playing here ... in front of his crowd. He knows everyone wants him to play.

"The one thing great about Nick, [is] he's very transparent and very open about what he's feeling and what he thinks."
