Going to the gym with a friend makes things more fun and is a great way to keep each other motivated. On top of that, having a reliable spotter who understands your fitness journey can help you improve your posture and form. Though plenty of classes and training are available for those who want to up their fitness game, they don't teach you how to be a better spotter.

Follow these tricks to become a better gym buddy and an effective spotter.

Stay positive

Some days it takes a lot of discipline and force to get ourselves to the gym. We might feel tired from work or be in a lousy mood, and putting in that hard work at the gym doesn't sound all that appealing.

That’s when your spotter can be a positive influence. Studies have shown that working out in groups is a great motivator and will often allow us to perform at a higher level.

Help, but don’t help

A spotter isn’t just about counting the number of reps but is bench pressing. It’s important to stay alert and ready to jump in to help if your friend is struggling to finish a rep. But remember, you’re not there to help them lift.

Be firm

You’ll know their limits and capabilities if you spot a friend regularly. A spotter can motivate their friend to get in those last few reps on days when they feel like giving up. Having experience with this friend can help you confidently motivate and push them in a safe way.

Understand their goal

Working with the same spotter each time is ideal. Agree on a routine at the start of each workout; ask them how many reps and exercises they have planned for the day. If it’s leg day, don’t push them towards exercises that distract from their goal.

Maintain good hygiene

You wouldn’t want someone dripping in sweat standing over you as you bench press, so why not extend the same courtesy to your friend? Workouts are sweaty enough as is; keep your perspiration to yourself and dry off in between sets. The same goes for sweaty equipment; sweat-free benches and bars make for a much more hygienic experience.
