Anyone who watches the NCAA Tournament is familiar with Colgate. The Raiders have become a mainstay in March, winning the Patriot League title in four of the last five years.

While the program is still trying to win a game in the tournament, Colgate has established itself as one of the most consistent mid-major teams in the nation.

Plenty of fans can tell you about Colgate's basketball team, but can they tell you where Colgate is located?

The university isn't easy to find on a map and isn't much of a destination - although the basketball program's success might be starting to change that.

Here's what you need to know about Colgate, including its location and tournament history.

Where is Colgate?

Colgate University is in Hamilton, New York, located about 40 miles southeast of Syracuse. The school is about a four-hour drive to Manhattan and a three-hour drive to Buffalo.

Hamilton is located in Madison County and has a population of 4,107. Colgate has close to 3,000 undergraduate students, so Hamilton is very much a college-centric town without many other towns nearby.

The Princeton Review named Colgate's campus the most beautiful in America in 2015. The campus includes Taylor Lake and borders Seven Oaks Golf Club.

Syracuse's success on the court has long served as proof college basketball can thrive in upstate New York, and that's the model coach Matt Langel is following at Colgate.

The Raiders have faced the Orange almost every season for more than century and have won each of their last two meetings. A decade ago, Colgate's dominance over Syracuse would have seemed impossible.

Colgate NCAA Tournament history

Colgate has only reached March Madness six times in program history. Four of those six appearances have come in the last five years.

The Raiders finally broke through in Langel's eighth season, winning 24 games and earning a No. 15 seed in 2019. Colgate returned as a No. 14 seed in 2021 and 2022 but came up short despite holding a lead in both first round games.

Colgate's 26 wins this season are the most in school history. The team went 17-1 in Patriot League play and easily won the conference tournament to seal a tournament bid.

Before 2019, the Raiders' only NCAA Tournament appearances came in 1994 and 1995. Colgate was a No. 16 seed in both tournaments and, of course, didn't win a game.

Is this the year Colgate wins a game in March Madness? As tournament appearances pile up, winning on the national stage is now a reasonable expectation.
