The South Point 400 keeps getting pushed back later into the NASCAR Cup Series calendar.

The race began as one of the first races in the Cup Series playoff schedule. In 2020, it was moved to the Round of 12. Over the past two seasons, it has become the opening race in the Round of Eight, the semifinal round of the Cup Series playoffs.

At least two of the eight drivers still left competing for the 2023 championship can lay claim to having won the race before. Martin Truex Jr. won the race back in 2019 and Denny Hamlin went on to win it in 2021. Truex wound up finishing second in the Cup Series standings the year he won, while Hamlin placed third in 2021.

Neither them nor the remaining six playoff drivers, will drive out of pole position — that honor belongs to Christopher Bell, who has won the pole in four the past seven races. But all eight are looking to gain a crucial edge as the season heads into the final four races.
