There's something exciting about the new kids on the block. LeBron James and Kevin Durant have been around forever, dazzling fans and captivating audiences for years. But rookies bring an energy, a newness to a world that can sometimes feel stale. That's why we're taking a look at the odds on BetMGM for NBA Rookie of the Year, a futures market that will be part of the discussion until the buzzer sounds on the 2023-24 regular season in April.
BetMGM, an authorized gaming partner of the NBA, provides some of the most competitive odds on the 2024 MVP. Unlike some futures markets where bettors have to get their bets in before the season begins, BetMGM's NBA ROTY odds markets are available all season long.
The 2023-24 NBA participants don't feature as much balance throughout the board, headlined by the two runaway favorites — Chet Holmgren (-150) and Victor Wembanyama (+100). Holmgren is of course a product of last year's draft class, but was forced out of action for the year thanks to a foot injury. Despite being in the NBA's universe for a year, Holmgren officially stepped on the court for a regular season game back in October, which started the clock on his rookie campaign.
But the one key thing to keep in mind before you start firing off wager like Steph Curry from long range is that since 2000, a player outside the top-10 picks has captured this award only twice. Michael Carter-Williams of the Sixers was selected at No. 11 in 2013-14 and Malcolm Brogdon of the Bucks won it in 2016-17 after being taken at No. 36. If we are going to follow that trend, only a few players remain in contention for this season. Outside of Holmgren — who was drafted No. 2 — here are those players that would fit the trend:
Pick | Player | Team |
1 | Victor Wembanyama | Spurs |
2 | Brandon Miller | Hornets |
3 | Scoot Henderson | Trail Blazers |
4 | Amen Thompson | Rockets |
5 | Ausar Thompson | Pistons |
6 | Anthony Black | Magic |
7 | Bilal Coulibaly | Wizards |
8 | Jarace Walker | Pacers |
9 | Taylor Hendricks | Jazz |
10 | Cason Wallace | Thunder |
Wembanyama (+100) certainly has the fanfare of being the prince that was promised to take over the NBA as James' career winds down. Lost in the shuffle of the battle between Wembanyama and Holmgren is Miller (+15000), who has put together a fine season in Charlotte. But just like any other award in any other sport, it's important to shape the narrative. And no one loves a good narrative like the voters, where the story is just as important as the play on the court. Before you make your picks, it's key to remember that aspect of how awards are won.
No matter your thoughts on the race for ROY, it's important to remember the ebbs and flows of what is a long season. Injuries happens, slumps, trades and a variety of other factories can negatively impact the price that is being hung on the board right now. The future might be exciting, but it's also unwritten. As each of these players write their story, the voters ultimately decided which one put their pens to good use. Since nothing is ever guaranteed and situations are constantly evolving, remember to not be a prisoner of the moment. One bad game on a Tuesday night in November won't be remembered after a dominant week in March. So sit back, relax, have some fun and most importantly, please play responsibly.
