New York City Marathon 2023: How to watch, start time, route, qualifying times, list of past winners

Put your running shoes on, New York, because the world's biggest marathon is back.

Last year, the New York City Marathon held its first race back in full force since being canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. There were 47,475 finishers, nearly a 20,000 jump in runners from 2021.

Evans Chebet of Kenya took home the men's victory with a time of 2:08:41. Fellow Kenyan Sharon Lokedi ran the race in 2:23:23 to win the women's division.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2023 NYC Marathon, including start times and prize money.

How to watch the New York City Marathon in 2023

  • Date: Sunday, Nov. 5
  • Time: 8 a.m. ET
  • TV channel (national): ESPN2, ABC
  • TV channel (New York): WABC-TV (channel 7)
  • Live stream: ESPN App, Fubo

The NYC Marathon starts at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 5 beginning with the wheelchair division. Other divisions will begin at staggered times throughout the morning, with the last group beginning the race at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Locals can watch the race from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET on WABC-TV.

The marathon will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET. ESPN3 will provides coverage from pre-race at 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. ET, along with a shot of the finish line from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.

An encore presentation will air nationally on ABC from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET. 

The race can be streamed through the ESPN app as well as Fubo, which offers a free trial.

New York City Marathon prize money

The total purse for the NYC marathon Open division is $534,000 split between the top men's finishers and top women's finishers ($267,000 each).

There is prize money available for the other divisions, as well. The purses are as follows: USA Division ($116,000), New York Road Runner's Division ($38,000), Master's Division ($12,000) and Wheelchair Division ($155,000). Each purse is split evenly between men and women. The Non-Binary Division has a purse of $15,000.

New York Road Runners will pay a bonus for race winners who break the existing event record in the Open Division and/or Wheelchair Division. Winners will receive $50,000 if they can beat the time.

New York City Marathon 2023 route

Runners will complete the 26.2 miles by racing through all five boroughs of NYC.

Starting in Staten Island, they'll cross the Verraazano Bridge, run through Brooklyn and Queens, cross the Queensboro Bridge, race up the east side of Manhattan to the Bronx, then back down along Central Park, where the marathon officially finishes.

New York City Marathon weather forecast 2023

The forecast for Sunday's race shows temperatures in the high 40s in the early morning before reaching the low 60s during the afternoon.

Thankfully, there is a minimal chance of rain, though it will be a cloudy day until the sun peeks out later.

New York City Marathon qualifying times

There are many ways to qualify for the NYC Marathon, and qualifying by time is probably the most difficult.

To qualify this way, runners must meet the standards set for their age group. The times for men and women in the 2023 race are listed below.
