World Bicycle Day- Cycle these trails for glimpses of Hong Kong’s iconic landmarks

From Disneyland to the Big Buddha, there are many facets to explore in Hong Kong. Take advantage of the beautiful summer days and cycle to some of these remote destinations in the city for a glimpse of what iconic sights of Hong Kong. 

We look at five cycling routes that will bring you up close and personal for a side of Hong Kong beyond its bustling facade.

A 25km-trail that overlooks the stunning hills from Lantau island, there are several routes to take on the Mui Wo track that leads to different scenic attractions. The trail is relatively easy to maneuver, with a mix of paved and raw paths. The three-hour ride will take you to one of the city’s most recognised monuments, the Big Buddha. 

Take a ferry from Central Pier 6 and enjoy the scenic 55-minute boat ride before heading to one of the local bike shops for a rental.

Tung Chung to Sunny Bay

Get a glimpse of that Disney magic with this 15km track that takes you from Tung Chung to Inspiration Lake in Sunny Bay. The family-friendly route takes riders near Disneyland to the artificial lake itself.  Pack a picnic and enjoy an afternoon soaking in the lakeside views or take the Mickey Mouse-themed MTR to Disneyland Resort station and take advantage of some of the Instagram-worthy spots outside of the theme park.

There are plenty of bike shops around the start of the route near Tung Chung MTR station.

What remains of Hong Kong’s heritage as a fishing village, Cheung Chau is a great weekend getaway regardless of whether you enjoy it by foot or by bicycle. The car-free island makes a great cycling spot for families; Cheung Chau island offers a peaceful respite from the city and sea views. Explore the fishing village and cycle along the cycling route from the south of the island. You'll eventually end up near the Sai Wan Pier, where there are plenty of cafes, local eateries, and shops.

One of the city’s newest attractions M+ art museum, is just steps away from the West Kowloon Art Park cycling trail. The paved pathway is ideal for entire families, and those cycling the path will also get a full view of the city’s famous harbourfront views. There are smart bikes along the route for rental, and visitors can pick up and drop them off at a number of points. 

The bicycle path is a 15-minute walk from Kowloon MTR station. 

Nam Sang Wai

Prepare for encounters with wildlife when exploring this 7 km trail nestled inside a wetland park. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional homes and ancestral halls, a rural and rustic side of Hong Kong you won’t experience anywhere else. A popular weekend destination in Yeun Long, there are numerous eateries to visit in the area.

Cyclists will be required to share the road with cars to reach Nam San Wai from Yeun Long, so avoid this if you’re planning a trip with children or newbie riders.
